Recent research shows that only 20% of UK residents is aware of the potential health risks associated with radioactive radon gas.
Exposure to high levels of radon gas is deemed a leading cause of lung cancer, and it occurs naturally in homes across the country and the world.
However, a survey just revealed that less than 20% of respondents were aware of radon exposure risks, while 12% were uncertain, and more than 2/3 had no awareness of the issue.
In areas where radon is more prevalent, testing can confirm if dangerous levels have been reached. Surprisingly, only 6% of UK adults have ever checked their homes for radon levels, with 90% reporting that they haven’t done so.
Radon exposure’s health effects may not show for many years, making it a lesser-known risk compared to more acute dangers like carbon monoxide poisoning, which is much better known and action is regularly taken to reduce it.
While uncertainty about radon prevails among respondents, approximately 45% felt that more should be done to raise awareness about radon risks, especially in high-risk areas.
Discussing radon exposure is important to raise the level of awareness and lower the levels of radon in homes. The need for proactive measures is crucial, as currently, only one in 20 residents has checked their homes for radon gas levels.
Remember, if you live in an area where radon is prevalent, consider arranging a radon gas test to ensure your safety and taking informed action based on the results.
